Head Lice Treatment. Open Your Mind.

by norman horowitz

Everyone should know about head lice treatment even though it is not discussed very often. The three kinds of lice live on different parts of the human body. Pubic lice live in the pubic region while body and head lice live on the head. Head lice is the most often contracted of the three.

Although a lice infestation is a cause for embarrassment for many, it has nothing to do with dirty hair or a lack of hygiene. The tiny insects can jump from one person to the next when they are sitting close together. They can also be transferred when people share brushes, combs, scarves, or hats.

Without human beings, lice will begin to die in a matter of a few weeks. Some household items cannot be washed or sprayed with pesticide and that is where knowing this fact is useful. Plastic bags can seal off the lice and lice eggs and get rid of the lice off of that item that previously would not have been possible.

Lice are so tiny that it may be hard to even tell if you need to start a head lice treatment at all. Usually a note from school warns of an outbreak and the search is on. The insects are very small and may be difficult to see, but one clue is the discovery of nits on the base of hair shafts. These lice eggs look like tiny grains of rice and are glued to the hair. Every one must be killed or removed for a head lice treatment to be complete.

Check the scalp with a special fine toothed comb to remove nits and any live or dead lice after treatment for a couple of weeks. You should find dead adult lice after you have treated with a lice spray, shampoo, or lotion purchased over the counter. If not, you may require a prescription product that is stronger, so ask your doctor for one. For complete removal and success in this endeavor, treat your clothing, bedding, furniture and carpet too.

Insecticide head lice treatment products can be replaced with nontoxic herbal ones. These are generally available online or at health food stores. Messy, multi-use home remedies exist as well as store bought ones and though they are not as recommended, mayonnaise, petroleum jelly or oil can be used to kill lice. The head of the infected person is covered in a shower cap overnight and then the nits are combed out. Sometimes multiple shampoos are required but it is still considered a cheap and effective method.

There are 3 types of lice: pubic lice, body lice, and hair lice. Lice aren't caused by poor hygiene. They transfer from person to person. Lice need human hosts to live. To eliminate them, you need to clean household items by spraying, washing, or sealing them in plastic bags. Lice are tiny and hard to find. Nits are found "glued" to hair shafts. They must all be removed to completely eradicate the infestation. After treatment, recheck periodically. Over-the-counter head lice treatment may not work. Stronger prescription medications are available. Health store products and home remedies are often effective. Home treatments are messy and may require more than one treatment.
